Romani Expert Groups
for Romani Integration

Republic of Macedonia

Taking into account both the small number of Romani experts in Macedonia and the need to ensure that future initiatives aimed at Roms in Macedonia are designed as well as implemented by Roms in Macedonia, each of the four Expert Groups brings together 7-11 Romani experts drawn from throughout the country. Additionally, the need to attend to the position of Romani women and girls in the four core areas is met through the active participation of female Romani experts in each of the Expert Groups, rosters for which are given below.

The Expert Group on Education is composed of a variety of different professionals such as lawyers, NGO activists, students of journalism and experienced educators who work directly with Romani children within and outside the mainstream educational system. This Expert Group is concerned with issues such as reasons for drop-out with Romani children, discrimination within the educational system, the position of Romani women in education, local-self government and its significance for the education of Roms. The Group’s discussions have focused on the improvement of the national strategy for the integration of Roms in Macedonia.

The Expert Group on Health consists of NGO activists and health care professionals, as well as students of medicine and pharmacy who constitute future potential for the integration of Roms within the Macedonian health care system. This Group’s discussions have also focused on the improvement of the national strategy for the integration of Roms in Macedonia. Further, the members of the Group are interested in issues of social and health care security, and discrimination within health care system, among others.

Another area of discussion has been improvement of the national strategy for the integration of Roms in Macedonia.

The Expert Group on Civil Rights is predominantly a coalition of lawyers, law students and NGO activists who are interested in a wide spectrum of social issues, from discrimination within the society to awareness amongst Roms with regards to universal human rights and freedoms. What is specific for this Expert Group is that the members’ interests are closely connected to the legal aspects of health care, education and employment and Roms in Macedonia. As is true of the other Expert Groups, the discussions of the Expert Group on Civil Rights have focused on the improvement of the national strategy for the integration of Roms in Macedonia.
